many people are stupid

i was just reading on a web site which is geared towards better health, getting in shape, taking care of your body, etc. and there was a large q/a section. nearly every person on there wrote in about how they had a goal of so many pounds, but only one or two even talked about working out, body mass, strength training or anything actually healthy. it was all about how they were eating so many calories and only losing one or two pounds a week, but they wanted it to go faster.

the rote response to nearly every one is "figure out your body comp, set realistic goals, watch what you eat, work out, and ignore the scale because the scale doesn't tell you the whole story."

it was really frustrating reading such blatant ignorance. i know it's not really their fault, it's the media who has convinced us all that the scale tells the absolute truth, and that is the only tool by which to measure success. we've also been told that by simply eating less, you can lose weight, which is only partly true. if you have a whole lot of fat mass to lose, and are eating entirely the wrong things to begin with, changing your diet can help. but there is no miracle. you have to work to lose those last 10 or 20 lbs.

when i tell people that i lost 50 lbs at one point, they ask how i did it, and i tell them i ate healthy, and i exercised. that's it. they are always shocked and visibly put off by the whole working out thing, as though they expected me to say i took some miracle drug, or went on some amazing new diet. no, i went to the gym 5+ days a week, i sweat, i did a lot of cardio and a lot of weight training, and i worked my ass off, literally. i lost a lot of weight, and i got in great shape, but it was work. it was not easy, it was not fast, it was not simple.

sure, i lost 50 lbs, but it took me nearly two years to do it. that's less than 1/2 of a pound per week, and some people are complaining that they aren't seeing enough results at 2 pounds per week. plus, i put on a ton of muscle mass and got really strong. i also had the stamina to run a marathon. it isn't just about being skinny, it's about being healthy, and being strong.

i don't know how to get this message out there in a way that could eliminate the ignorance on a large scale. with spokespeople like jared telling people that just by eating subway every day you can lose hundreds of pounds, or carmen electra telling people that by taking a pill you can look like a supermodel, my voice would get lost in the din.

if you read this, and you get the message, please spread it. maybe some day society will get it.

that ain't right

i've been doing my best to go to the gym at least 4 days a week, plus play kickball on sundays, for the last month. i've been using the nutrition tracker on bally's web site to make sure i'm reaching my target nutrition levels. i've been doing lots of cardio to burn fat and build stamina, but also lots of muscle building exercises.

and yet, while i've lost 5 lbs in march alone, i've actually GAINED body fat. two whole % points. i've lost an inch all over, according to the tape measure, though i'm not sure if it just means i'm not accurately measuring the same spot every time, or if i've actually lost an inch.

i don't get it. it doesn't make sense. why am i not losing fat? surely i haven't lost 5 lbs of water... i'm verging on dehydration as it is, even with two or more bottles of water every day. :( i don't get it.

measuring sticks

this weekend bryan commented that he was really impressed at the progress i had made, that he could already see muscle definition in my legs, that i had lost weight in my face, and that i should keep up the good work.

while i do appreciate the comment, none of it is actually true.

i have not lost any body fat, i have actually put on weight (and not because i'm retaining water, in fact i verge on dehydration every day), i have not lost any inches anywhere on my body, none of my clothes are fitting better... i have made no actual, measurable progress. none.

keep up the good work.

paying for it

yesterday i ate a whole lot of junk food. donuts, burritos, more donuts, candy, red bull, pepsi... by the end of the day i felt bloated and lethargic and like i really needed to puke.

instead i went to the gym for an hour and a half.

this morning i've put on 3 lbs, but my body fat % hasn't gone up, so hopefully that means i'm gaining muscle mass. that's what i'm going to tell myself anyway.

kickin' butt

today we had kickball practice for more than two hours. we split the group in two, eric working with the boys and bryan working with the girls. bryan had us running sprints, then rotating through, taking turns doing fielding/bunting/kicking practice. then we got back together with the rest of the group and continued to do rotating drills, practicing one person bunting while the rest of the team was doing fielding drills.

i'm exhausted and i know i'm going to pay for this later.
