wow, i need new shorts
this weekend i discovered a few things.
- the only pair of shorts i have are too small
- i have a very strangely shaped muscle configuration on the back of my thigh wherein the bottom of my glute leads into another surface, which leads to my actual quad. when seen peeking out of the bottom of my shorts, this intermediary surface appears to be the bottom of my butt, when in fact it is not.
- because my actual butt is so big, this extra surface makes it seem as though i have some bizarrely shaped butt with 4 cheeks or something
it is definitely time for a new pair of shorts.

that explains a lot!
the other day i mentioned the bally fitness log, which is available for free for everybody. they also have a nutrition log, which is only available to members, which allows you to track your intake (food, drinks, water, snacks, etc), as well as your expenditures (workouts, daily life, etc). it is much more robust than the free service, which makes perfectly good sense.
after playing around with it, i think i may have discovered why i have been working out since february and not seeing any significant results. i'm starving! (duh. i could have told you that)
when i plugged in the actual nutrition information from the packages of food that i have been eating, i discovered that i am actually about 400 or more calories short every day. i should be getting about 1200 calories and on days when i'm eating everything i intend to (cereal with skim milk, yogurt snack, lean cuisine, zone bar snack, salad for dinner), i'm just barely getting 800 calories!
in order to get all the nutrition and calories that i should, i need to eat both the yogurt and the zone bar as my morning snack, then a slimfast shake for my afternoon snack, and even then i have enough room in the diet to have a ham sandwich instead of a salad, or still eat the salad but have an evening snack of apples and cheese or something later. maybe even a small cookie! ooOOooh!
on the days when i was eating just orange juice and yogurt for breakfast, a lean cuisine for lunch, and a ham sandwich for dinner, i was actually burning nearly all the calories i had taken in all day, just by going to the gym for an hour.
take that, you person who keeps telling me i'm eating too much! you know who you are...

pukey day
woke up this morning feeling like i was going to be sick. thankfully i had showered before bed, so i could sleep in this morning and get up with just enough time to brush my teeth, get dressed, and get out the door. but now i'm at work and i'm not feeling much better. i'm feeling a little better - better enough to tough it out and not go home - but i still feel like i'd much rather be in bed than here.

running around in circles
i took two weeks off. one for my period, and one because, well, i'm lazy.
monday i set a goal for myself of trying to reach 125 lbs before we go to portland. i'd really like to see 120 but i just don't see that happening. i don't see 125 happening, but it's at least a tiny bit more reasonable.
honestly, since i started half-assedly working out a few months ago, i haven't lost any weight. i'm still hovering right around 134-136 every week. and while i'd like to tell myself that i'm losing body mass, i'm really not. i'm still around a 27-28" waist, 35-37" hip, and 40-41" butt. nothing has really significantly changed, and the only difference i may see can usually be attributed to water weight or what i had to eat that day before i got on the scale.
it's dissappointing and frustrating and disheartening. so i'm really making a concerted effort to get some actual working out done over the next few weeks. it's going to be easy enough as long as we are still living in the apartment, since i've got easy access to a really great facility. i'm not sure what i'm going to do once we move out. i'm considering keeping one of the key cards, telling the office we lost the key, paying the fine, and hoping they never pay close enough attention to the cameras in the workout room to notice that i'm there and shouldn't be. unfortunately, being the honest person that i am, it would probably tear me up inside, knowing i could get in trouble at any minute. i hate being in trouble. though, really, if i'm there after work, who would see? the office closes at 5 pm on week days.
*sigh* i'll probably just get a rec-center membership for $20 and call it good. i'm not sure about the one near where we live, but one of the trainers at our gym keeps saying he's been going to the one in great neck, near where we live, and that it's dirty and gross and he doesn't like to go there. :( that's not encouraging.
i wish we could afford for me to start my bally's membership back up. i'd really like to go back there. guess we'll have to see how our finances work out after living in the house for a couple months.

oh, i hurt...
the husband of one of the women in our department got transferred to south carolina for work, so she will be leaving. today we had a going away party/staff meeting/potluck.
at first i was really bummed that it fell on the same day, at the same time, as the monthly birthday party/potluck being held over in IT, but now i realize it was a blessing in disguise. i hurt so bad i just want to curl up and die from eating so much. my pants which had been nice and cozy this morning now seem painfully tight and restrictive. if i had to go through this twice this week i think i would have had to buy a whole new wardrobe. i would have loved to hang out over in the IT party, because the people are always cool, and they always have a HUGE spread of food, but i also always end up eating way more than i should, and kicking myself for it later.
so i guess i get to work twice as hard at the gym for the next couple days. luckily bryan is out of town so i have nothing better going on and i can spend plenty of time there.

crash and burn
the only downside to vault is that when i come down, i come down hard. at midnight last night i was wide awake, with no sign of slowing down. at 12:30 i was asleep on the couch.
up until about 10 minutes ago i was wide awake. and just now i found myself nodding off at my desk. and i'm afraid if i drink more now i won't get to sleep tonight. :(

swollen
ugh... too much junk food... clothes too tight... such discomfort...
ok, here's what i'm thinking. i'd like to shoot for 125 lbs by the time we head out to portland. just... because it seems like as good a goal as any. i'd like to hit 120 lbs some day, but i think 10 lbs in 2 months is more realistic than 15 lbs.
i can do this. i really can. it just means that i HAVE to go to the gym every day, i HAVE to try to walk on my lunch break, or at least do the stairs a couple times during the day, and i absolutely HAVE to buy more healthy food to keep at work (and more salad dressing for home. i have salad, but nothing to put on it).
i think i can... i think i can... i think i can...

fitness log
btw, i discovered that bally's has a free online fitness log program that you don't even have to be a member to use. it's pretty nifty. you put in all sorts of variables like your daily weight, any measurements that you want to track, what weights you do, and how much cardio you do, and it tracks it for you and gives you reports on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis (doesn't send them to you, but you can view them online). for example, it can show you how many calories you burnt doing the 15 minute mile on the eliptical machine at moderate intensity level. then it will show you how many calories total you have burnt over the past month, in all the time you have spent on the eliptical. then it will compare that to how many calories you have burnt over the past month on the treadmill. it's pretty spiffy!

progress and backsliding
last night i went to the gym and the girl that works there wouldn't let me use the electronic scale. it's technically only there for use by the manager's daughter, who never comes in anyway. but the guys that work there let me use it... anyway, so i had to use the regular/manual scale and i never trust that thing. if i pushed the weight all the way to the top and slid it down, it said 132 lbs. if i slid it all the way to the bottom and pushed it up, it said 133 lbs. so i'm going to call it 132.5 lbs. in any case, when i went on saturday the digital scale said 135.0 lbs, so it's an improvement either way. though i was pretty sick yesterday, so i may have just been dehydrated. and of course i started my period today, so i'm going to be swollen and bloated when i go back, and it'll read something stupid like 138. man, i hate the scales...
what i can trust, however, is a tape measure. i've decided to start measuring myself, since i know that my build is more important than my weight. i could be 140 lbs and a size 12, or 140 lbs and a size 8. i started last week and as of this week i have lost one inch in my waist and one inch in my butt! w00t! i haven't been measuring my thighs, arms, or bust, though i should at least measure my thighs since those are really big target areas for me. i'd like to get those down to a more reasonable size. my waist is nice and small, but i have these big ol' thighs that keep me from being able to wear jeans that fit me properly.
i really need to start making my own clothes...
bryan has decided that i'm "built funny." apparently the bottom half of me is disproportionately large for the top half of me. gee, thanks honey. as if i didn't already have a complex about having huge legs! :P i know he didn't mean it in a hurtful way, just as an observation. but it hurts me to know that it has become so obvious that other people notice it and point it out. not that anybody else would point it out, but he's my husband, so he doesn't have to worry about being polite. *shrug*
so since i want to lose weight and not bulk up, i've started doing more reps and less sets with lower weight. and since i did weights twice last week with lower weights, when i went yesterday i was able to bump up several of my weight groups by 5 lbs without feeling much strain. of course, that may have something to do with me spending too much time yesterday talking to the other women in the gym rather than just going straight from machine to machine... normally i just go straight through without really taking any breaks. by the time i'm done i'm usually pretty exhausted. but yesterday i was taking breaks between sets and hardly breaking a sweat, even though i was doing more weight. crazy. :)

well that was silly
yesterday morning i went to the store before i went to work to get skim milk for my breakfasts. this morning i went to use it, opened it up, poured it into the bowl and thought "gee... that looks awfully thick for skim milk... i hope it hasn't gone bad already..." it didn't smell bad and it certainly didn't taste like it had gone bad, but it was definitely thicker than skim milk ought to be.
then i looked on the carton. i had grabbed half and half. :(
