i only add people to my IM list that i need to talk to. since it's my work account, i really only have my co-workers, my immediate family, and a couple other very close friends on there. i have everybody else blocked, because i'm not supposed to be chatting at work, so if i add someone else to the list, it usually means i needed to talk to them about something specific.

someone came online the other day and i have no idea who they are or why i added them. a google search yields no results associated with that screen name. i don't know if it was a kickballer, a co-worker, an mr2 owner, one of bryan's customers, a friend i had finally tracked down... no idea.
