good progress
i nearly finished that dress yesterday. all that's left is to tailor the sides, hem it, and make the belt. i may actually finish it by tonight. i'm pretty proud of how quickly it came together, really. this plaid is WAY easier to work with than the other plaid i used.
when it came time to decide on how to line it, at first i was going to use that caramel faux suede i have lying around. i've already cut out the dress pieces, so it'd be really easy to just throw that together and make it the lining, but i'm afraid it'd stick to my tights and ride up and be really uncomfortable.
i figured that since it's a heavier material than what i used before, maybe it doesn't need a full lining, and i can just do the yolk like in the instructions. then i thought it might be fun to use that purple satin i have lying around. it'd go so well!
really, all it proves is that i hate myself and am into my own pain.
this is the same satin i used to line that little hopscotch skirt i made. i had initially bought it to make a shirt out of but after using it to line that skirt i tossed it on the "do not use" pile because i discovered what a hassle it is to work with. it pulls, it moves, it doesn't want to cut straight or lay straight, it wrinkles easily... it's just a huge pita to work with.
even so, i think i just about beat it into submission.
unfortunately, the trim i was going to use was too wide and joann's didn't have the same color any narrower, so i didn't trim the edges of the pockets, belt loops, collar, and sleeves like i had intended to (like i did on the other one). i'm not sure if i'm happy about it or not. it looks unfinished to me in the places where you can see the satin peeking out from behind the plaid. thankfully those places are few and far between, but still. makes me want to take them off and do something about it. i found some trim cord at joann's that would have worked if i had thought about it ahead of time, but you have to put it between the layers of fabric in the construction process and there's no way i'm taking it all back apart to do that.
hopefully i'll be able to finish it tonight and have pics up by tomorrow. we'll see.
