suggestions?

bryan got this really awesome camera as a wedding present from my parents. it does all sorts of neato things and takes really great pictures. at least in bryan's hands (he's a much better photographer than i).

but since becoming the unofficial photographer and historian for the kickball division, i've become more accustomed to carrying around a small camera. i find myself more and more often wishing i had a camera handy to snap shots of little things here and there. things i find funny or neat or pretty or interesting or whatever. scenery, people, cars, animals...

my dad had offered to get me a little camera for just such a purpose, after buying bryan's very fancy one, and i turned him down at the time but now i'm thinking if the offer is still standing, i may take him up on it.

so here's what i'm looking for:

1. something cheap. i don't want to feel too bad if it gets dinged up a little.

2. something small. i'd like to be able to carry it in my purse if possible, or in my small backpack, failing that.

3. decent picture quality. it doesn't need to be any high-resolution thing with special lenses, but i'd like to be able to tell what i've taken a picture of.

4. multiple light settings. i will likely be taking lots of night/bar photos as well as inside under regular office or household lighting, plus of course lots of outside stuff.

5. auto-focus and/or stabilizer. while not absolutely required, it would be really nice to have. i tend to shake when i try to stand still enough to take pictures.

6. easy to use. potentially i'd need to hand it to someone and have them take a picture with it at some point. i shouldn't have to give them a 10-minute lesson in using it.

so that's basically it. thoughts? suggestions?

What did Bryan get?

I really really like the Canon G-series. Right now the G9 is simply fantastic. If I was looking for a point-and-shoot to supplement my SLR, I'd definitely get a G9. With all of the free money I have lying around. Heh.

dpreview has a list of their popular cameras, as well as a way to narrow the sarch down by criteria.

I think the Cannon SD1100 IS will fit your requirements pretty well. It is super small, has good image quality and image stabilization. I own it's predecessor the SD1000 and they are nearly identical except that the SD1100 is higher megapixel and has the image stabilization. It is super easy to use and it is a great camera to just carry in your pocket.

I swear I posted a comment on this. Did it get lost in moderation? Or am I smoking crack?

was going to say something about yes, you're obviously smoking crack, because i checked my comments this morning and i didn't see it. but i just found it in the junk folder so yeah. my fault.

as for bryan's camera, according to Flickr, it's a sony dslr-a100. it's fancy, fits on a tripod, has different lenses for close up or far away, has lense filters, multiple shutter speeds... more buttons and switches than i know what to do with.

the SD1100 looks like it fits the given requirements very well. easy to use, cheap, would fit nicely in my purse, all that good stuff. but dang, that G9 takes some pretty pictures...
