kinda painful

i'm sitting here listening to a conversation between my department head, my supervisor, and another person in our department. they are discussing starting a city blog. they have now said that word so many times it's begun to lose meaning. worse, it's really starting to make me a little nauseous. at the point where the other co-worker said "but how does a blog compare to a wall on myspace?" i wanted to scream.

i love my supervisor but listening to this conversation is so painful. old people talking about technology they don't really, or just barely, understand. it hurts.

counting the days

my buddy, erik, is getting married to his gf of about 10 years, trista, on july 5th. we will be there.

for the last few days we have been experiencing 90+ degree weather. yesterday was over 100 and today is looking to be even hotter. combine with the high humidity and dew point and the heat index is slated to be nearing 120 today.

fourth of july weekend in portland should be in the 70's with no humidity. i. can't. wait.

not mine

last night i came home from work to find a business card stuck in the front door, with a handwritten "Please call us" on the back. the business name indicated that it was an auto repossession company, there were little pictures of cars being towed, and the person on the card was listed as an "investigator".

my gut reaction was that it was for the previous tenant, who never bothered to change his address when he moved out nearly a year ago. we're still getting his bills, including several "final notices" and even a court summons indicating he was being charged by the city for operating a business without a license.

i tried to call, but got no answer. i didn't sleep at all last night, fearing that they were instead coming for us, or a customer car or something.

first thing this morning i called them to get it straightened out and my gut was right. it was the other guy. i told them he moved out almost a year ago, gave them the name of the property management and agent, and hopefully that's the last we hear of that.

can't get comfortable

for some reason the lighting in my office is causing me all sorts of occular discomfort today. normally i leave the overhead lights off because they are blaringly bright, opting instead for a series of desk lamps strewn about my office space. but for some reason today those lamps were burning my eyes. too dim, or too bright, i couldn't decide. possibly too dim in comparison to my monitors. i tried turning them on in varying arrangements, moving them around, and turning them all off altogether, but nothing seemed to help. finally i resorted to turning on the overhead light which is insisting on flickering constantly, which is making me nuts.

i guess i'm spoiled

at work we have been talking a lot lately about "social media" and how it relates to what we do. blogs, wikis, chatting, message boards, and most recently second life. apparently people are beginning to use second life to host off-site staff meetings, international business conferences, training sessions, and other sorts of things. you can build a nearly identical replica of your "brick and mortar" office building in the digital world, give each of your employees the opportunity to build themselves an avatar, and use second life as a way to network with team members who may be in far away locations.

sounds great, but i'd never tried it. since i'm expected to be able to speak intelligently on the subject, i took the time this weekend to download and install the client on my home computer.

my first reaction: i hated it.
