backing it up
last week i watched a video online of a guy playing through "enter sandman" on expert and i told bryan i thought i could do it. not saying i'd get 100% on the first time through, but i thought i could do ok at it. he basically said "oh yeah, big shot? let's see it."
unfortunately we had moved our profiles onto the xbox in the living room, which i couldn't use because 1) it would require firing up the projector, 2) then there was the smell, and 3) now the living room is all torn apart from trying to patch up the hole around the a/c unit. so instead i was playing on the xbox in the computer room which only had bryan's spare account on it, which hadn't been played before, so "enter sandman" wasn't unlocked yet.

because we went out last night, i didn't get to sleep until nearly midnight, i just barely got up in time to get to work, and tonight bryan wants to go out to karaoke with some friends, which means we'll be out until 2 or 3 am.
at least i can sleep in tomorrow.

gittin' good
last night we went over to bryan's buddy's house who had received rock band from his fiance for valentine's day.
i discovered that i'm getting pretty competent. i can breeze through most songs on medium, and a handfull on hard. i was even getting 99% on hard on a few songs.
on top of it, the buddy's fiance didn't know most of the songs, so i was singing along while playing the drums on the songs that i knew, to show her how the song went. even doing that i was still generally getting 95% or better on the drums.
unfortunately i was still dreaming about it this morning. i had a hard time waking up because in my head i was trying to play the music when the alarm would go off, as though i needed to play the song right to make the alarm stop beeping.

fear for the future

get out of my head!
over the last few nights i have been playing through the rock band solo drum campaign on hard difficulty. hard is really hard and i'm starting to fail out of songs. my psyche doesn't deal well with failure. consequently, i'm playing it in my sleep. i close my eyes and see the music scrolling past, impossibly fast. i can't ever seem to keep up with all the notes. my dreams are tortured with the sounds of failure. a sense of dread follows me around my waking moments. the *click* of missed notes haunting me.
in my dreams i keep trying to turn off the machine, to get some rest. but i keep ending up with "just one more". i've failed out of a song and i must try it just one more time to try to get through. even when i put down the drumsticks, the music keeps going. i wake up sweating, panicked, needing to go back to the game to play until i get it right.
i am slowly getting better at the game, which brings me some solace, and abates the nightmares somewhat. but the harder the songs get, the worse the nightmares, until i am able to get past them.

economic stimulus
on the surface, this seems like a great idea. who wouldn't want a few hundred bucks tossed back their way?
but the skeptic in me says there must be some catch. where is the money coming from? what are we cutting funding for in order to have this money to give out? how much is this going to increase the already ridiculous national deficit? how many people will actually qualify for this? how long is it going to be before we actually see any of it?
assuming we do actually get this extra money returned to us, and assuming it is within the next couple months, i know exactly what i'm doing with it: buying plane tickets.

doooood.
it just occurred to me this morning that tonight i have to go accept an award in front of the city council.
the web site i work on was up for an award and came in 10th in the country for cities of our population size.
if you guys want to watch, check out the live stream on the City's web site. the city council meeting should start around 6:30 pm, and while there may be a slight time delay, you can still watch me totally trip over my pants hem in front of all of council, the city manager, the mayor, my boss, and everybody in attendance.
yay!

bryan is my hero
yet another reason bryan is my hero: he found the smell.
somehow a large rat had climbed into the electrical panel on the back side of the stove and died there. super-dee-duper!
bryan's mom has agreed to pay for a new stove.

yay for sleep
this weekend bryan and i worked a kickball tournament on saturday (which means that neither the cabinetry nor the gaming got done) and because i'm an idiot we took gatorades and i didn't drink any of them. all i had to drink on saturday was red bull. by saturday night my head was throbbing and i knew that i had some pretty bad dehydration setting in.
we went to the after party but i didn't stay long. by 10:30 pm i was passed out.

so close
last week i realized that i had some spare headphones lying around at home from a cheapo mp3 player i bought a couple years ago. i figured they'd do nicely to replace the ones i recently broke.
what i didn't count on was these other heaphones being all of about a foot and a half long. anybody got an extension cord?
