killing time
so what will i do with my newfound spare time in the evenings? why, make clothes, of course.
i'm not sure what makes me think i can make clothes, after making a quilt and realizing how hard a time i have with straight lines, but i have decided that i need work clothes. i have a sewing machine and darnit, i mean to use it.
yesterday i picked out two patterns. one for some wide leg pants and one for a very cute little skirt, both of which will certainly be too long and need to be shortened.
most everything in joann's is on sale right now, so last night i picked up the two patterns and a 15 yard bolt of cheap muslin to try the patterns on first, to make sure i know what i'm doing before i go ruining perfectly good tweed. i got all the pieces for the pants cut out before bed time. unfortunately we're going to be doing christmas with bryan's mom tonight, and his dad and step mom are coming to town for saturday and sunday, so my next chance to work on them won't be until monday when bryan goes bird counting with his mom for the audobon society.
in a way, clothes are easier than quilts, because most people won't be looking so closely as to notice that your finishing stitches are not straight or even. but on the other hand, i still have to wear these things, and fitting has always been an issue for me. nevermind the fact that i've never actually successfully hemmed anything i've ever made.

Pants are a bitch. I wish you luck with them. I've always been better with skirts.

yeah, skirts seem much easier, which is why i also got a skirt pattern. but i am just not much of a skirt person. i really prefer pants and i think this pattern could be adapted to work with both nice fabrics for work, and denim. i've got a couple pairs of grubby jeans for working on cars or painting, but i need some nice jeans for going out in and i think those would look great in a nice dark wash denim.

I'm also worried the wide legs will make you look shorter than you are. And you're already pretty wee. I'd probably stick with a bootcut pant, and definitely keep the skirt right at knee length.

the problem is that while, yes, i am quite short, i am also very wide hipped with a big ol' butt, and fat thighs. pants that are fitted through the leg area and pull in at the knee make me look really funny. i go from an hourglass to a rollercoaster. it's just not good.
besides, stacy and clinton ALWAYS recommend straight legged pants.

Straight-legged is not wide-legged. Two different things. I'll need to see photos, stat!
