yes, i mind

i'm in public communications. i do the web site. i do not work in public works. i am not an engineer. as far as the intern in public works goes? i am not his teacher, his babysitter, his mommy, or his buddy. it's super great that he wants to take a web development class. i'm all for people being good at making web pages. but i am only willing to offer so much support before you start running over my nerves.

*intern calls me two days ago*
intern: hey, i have a web development question for you. do you have a sec?
me: uhh... sure... i guess...

intern comes up, tries to get me to look at this web site he made for some class, that he tried to ftp up to a server, but had no idea what ftp was, or how it was different from http or that i could view the server without having to log in... had no idea how to upload files properly via ftp, or how to link between files, or what a folder was. i had to explain this all to him.

his teacher should be fired.

*intern calls me up this morning*
intern: hey, i have a question for you. do you mind if i come up?
me: uh... sure... i guess...

*intern comes to my desk again*
intern: so i made this web page in publisher and when i publish it, it's only saving out one page, even though i made this really cool web site that's 4 pages long and i don't know why it's not saving out any of my other content. can you help me?

me: publisher is for publishing. it's not a web development program. i've never used it for making web sites. i don't know how to help you.

intern: so, what do you use for making web sites?

me: dreamweaver.

intern: yeah? how can i get a copy? do you think the department would buy me a copy?

me: probably not. it's a web development program. you're an engineering intern. it's $400.

i finally fired up publisher and showed him how, when you save one page, it saves all the rest of the documents into a folder right next to the page you just saved, including all of your images. i'd never used publisher before and in 30 seconds i figured this out. he then asked me why the image on his web page wasn't showing up (which he couldn't get uploaded because he doesn't know how to ftp, so he can't SHOW me the problem). i told him he needed to make sure that his document was properly linking to the image and that both the document and the image had been properly uploaded to the server in the correct locations.

intern: linking? what do you mean by linking?

me: *blink blink blink*

after finally getting him to understand that an html file is just a text file that points to other documents or objects which are not contained within the html file, unlike a pdf or a word file, and that yes, that DOES look an awful lot like html code, because it IS html code. the html code that's making your web page tends to look a whole lot like html code.

intern: so, do you mind showing me some of that dreamweaver?

me: yeah, actually, i kinda do mind.

intern: oh? are you busy?

me: yeah, actually, i kinda am busy. i kinda do have a job to do.

you love me

Somehow, the clueless always seem to think that their time is more valuable than yours...
