shenanigans

that has nothing to do with anything. i just wanted to say it.

so anyway, looks like bryan's mom has just about finished putting in the new tile around the tub. it's all grouted and sealed and all. looks... meh. i don't care for the tile she chose, but i told her that and she went with it anyway. not a whole lot more i can do about it. i know she's put a lot of work into it, and i can appreciate and respect that. but i still think it was a silly thing to do. she's lost more money by doing it herself than she would have by just paying someone to properly hang the wall with the correct materials in the first place, but that's her gig.

after we got the wood floor laid in the living room two weeks ago, eric hasn't been back to finish laying it in the hallway. he takes a whole day to lay a 12' x 14' room and can't be bothered to come back for a couple hours to lay a 3' wide hallway? yargh. if i had a big hammer, i'd do it myself. he left all the stuff there... but then i remember that i have no large motor skills and it'd probably look like total crap. see my above statement about doing things yourself rather than having a professional do it. takes 4 times as long and doesn't look even half as good. oh well.

i spent the weekend painting and crawling around on the floor. doesn't that sound like fun? well, it's not. really, it's not. though running around an empty house in nothing but a pair of shorts and a sports bra, singing nickelback, linkin park and limp bizkit at the top of my lungs? that's kinda fun.

aside from a little touching up in places where i accidentally got green paint on the ceiling and baseboards, the master bedroom is done. completely painted, including the ceiling and windows and everything. done. ready to move in. i still have to paint the ceiling in my sewing room then that room will be done to. i think i might repaint it a slightly darker color, but that's going to wait. right now, it's fine. i started painting the kitchen this weekend and have about half of the room painted. i still have to paint the other half of the room, the baseboards, the ceiling, and do the touch-ups, but i can't do much while half of our furniture is sitting in there. makes it tough to move around. i should probably go ahead and paint the living room while it's still empty. i did actually buy the first gallon of blue paint this weekend to get started on the living room, but i was really tired of painting. climbing up and down a ladder a million times a day is great for the legs, but that's about it. it gets old quick.

so instead i spent the large portion of the weekend on the floor. i spent about 4 hours on saturday scraping the floor in the hallway so it's all ready to go when eric can be bothered to come over and finish installing the wood. then i spent most of sunday (from about 10 am to 5 pm, with an hour break in there to run some parts out to bryan at the dyno) scrubbing the new wood floors to get the glue off that had gotten all over them during installation. i'm about 2/3 done doing that. i'm able to get the large portions up, but there are still marks all over the floor when looked at on an angle. it looks like little finger prints all over the floor. ugh. that's gonna drive me nuts. i did get some floor re-finishing stuff, but it has to sit for several hours after being applied, and you can't have any dust in the air, because it will settle on the floor and get embedded in the surface. so i have to wait on that until eric is done installing the rest of the floor, the a/c unit is properly mounted, and bryan's mom is done doing the tile. after all the scrubbing and scraping i did this weekend, my whole right arm hurts. especially my wrist and shoulder. ugh. and i'll be going back tonight for more. weeee...

bryan's mom has company coming this week and she told him he could stay in the room we've been using as our computer room. we didn't find out until last week. i mean, we knew he was coming, but we thought he was staying downstairs, or somewhere else. we didn't know she had promised him our room. so now we either have to move out by wednesday (yeah, not gonna happen), or move all of our stuff into our bedroom. i think we can fit most of it in our bedroom, but it's gonna be tight. we may have to take a few things over to the house that we won't need for the next couple days. i do think we could possibly move in over the weekend but i just don't see it happening during the week.

bryan talked to his mom's bf, butch, who is an HVAC guy, and they agreed to meet up this week to try to properly mount the a/c unit in the living room. i'm crossing my fingers but not holding my breath. of course, it's taken so long for all of this work to get done on the house that now we're moving in and don't even need the a/c unit. spectacular.

i bought all new switches and outlets for the whole house. we'll slowly go through and replace them all. they were really cheap, and most of the outlets and switches in the house are pretty nasty and mangled. should be a nice little upgrade.

bryan's mom has decided that now that she's done being a carpenter, and a tiler, she's going to try her hand at being a plumber! over the weekend she installed the bathroom sink. we discovered that it's leaking around the drain hole. she was going to just put some silicone/caulk on it, because that's her answer to everything, but butch convinced her to do it right, so she went out and bought all new hardware for the thing, only to discover that it appears to be a production flaw in the sink itself and even the new hardware isn't going to fix it, so she's going to just silicone it anyway. she also says that the previous tenants kept having the faucet hardware replaced and she had no idea how they kept breaking the faucet, but now she sees it's a problem with the sink, and we're going to just have to keep replacing the hardware. i'm kinda thinking, why not just replace the sink and vanity? wouldn't that be cheaper in the long run and a whole heck of a lot less hassle? but i'm stupid and practical like that. oh well. maybe next time i get a big paycheck from a side job bryan and i can look into getting one of those $200 units from home depot. something wider. with drawers. and counter space. mmmm... practicality...

i saw an ad this weekend for floor tiles on sale at home depot. i think it would be super cool to replace the vinyl with tile. might be a fun little project... i'd wait until we got the wall in the bathroom done, but i think we could do the bathroom for not too much and once we got the hang of it, i think we could do the kitchen. i've watched lots of hgtv. i think we could do the bathroom in a weekend.

bryan has said that he'd be glad to install a new ceiling fan in the kitchen, since the one that's in there is broken, and he would be glad to put in the new wall in the bathroom. now we just have to convince her to buy the fan and wall supplies. fans can be purchased for pretty cheap (for some reason the fans at lowe's are about 1/3 the price of the fans at home depot. weird) and the guy at home depot said he thought it'd be about $200 for all the supplies to build the wall. maybe after we've moved in and started playing rent, and she's seen a little return on all her work she'll be more willing to do it.

you love me

When is all of this supposed to be done? I thought you were supposed to be completely moved in after a month.

yeah, it was SUPPOSED to be a 3 week turnaround, MAX. but things never work out like that, do they?

it was supposed to be replace the carpet and vinyl, refinish the cabinets, call it good. only, we went in to replace the floors and found that the a/c unit was blown which we didn't know about. then we pulled the carpet and found black mold. then we pulled the vinyl and found more black mold and termites. ripped out and replaced the back wall in the kitchen. found that previous tenants ruined both screen doors, front and back, and the kitchen counter, had to have them all repaired/replaced. went to repaint the bathtub and found it rusting and disintegrating, and decided to replace it. while we were replacing the tub and had to have the toilet out anyway, decided to replace the toilet, since it was cracked and leaking. pulled out the old tub, found more termite damage, had to rebuild the back wall of the bathroom before putting in the new tub. found several other wall boards rotting out, had to have those replaced. couldn't get ahold of flooring guy to come put the new floor in. still haven't had the new a/c unit properly mounted.

it was SUPPOSED to be a 3 week turnaround, MAX. we're now going on 3 months. :( and while we're almost to the point where we can live there, it's far from done. still haven't finished the cabinetry, still need new doors, still need new windows, still need new ceiling fan, still lots of termite damage, still need to replace basically all of the baseboards in the whole house... it's going to be an ongoing project for the next couple years.
