when life interferes

this weekend is the preview event for Guild Wars: Eye of the North, and i have a golden ticket. it started this morning and runs through sunday night.

bryan is coming home on tuesday and i was hoping to have my sewing room and the master bedroom painted, the hallway at least primered, the kitchen cupboards at least stripped, and some sort of progress made on the living room before he got back.

lucky bum

bryan is going to PAX this weekend. no fair.

my gut reaction was "no, you can't go. we don't have the money to waste on such things, and besides that, it's not fair that you would get to go without me." but when he pointed out that it's not likely that either of us is ever again going to happen to be on the west coast during the time when this is happening, and knowing how much i personally would love to go, i gave him my blessing, with the instructions to enjoy every minute, take pictures of everything, then tell me all about it. at least if i can't go, i can live vicariously through him.

that smarts

the girls were actually allowed to do some kicking at practice on sunday (read: he told us to bunt, so we kicked) and my right shin is one giant bruise. from my ankle to my knee. everything hurts. ouch.

yeah, do that

memo to all team captains:

a great way to instantly demoralize and segregate your team is to show significant prejudice towards one section of your team.

for example, telling your COED team "girls, you're just there to look good. guys, you are responsible for every play" is not a great way to make your women feel trusted and heavily relied upon.

then when one of the women on your team asks if she can get into the kicking rotation, blowing her off and telling her that once the guys have kicked you'll bring the girls in for a little bunting practice, is not how you tell her and your other females that you believe in their abilities.

oh, and just because you keep saying that you don't mean to be insulting doesn't mean that you AREN'T insulting. it means you're an idiot.

mixed blessing

bryan flies back next tuesday. in just over a week my baby will be back home with me, helping me weather the storms, both literal and figural.

on the one hand, i am so excited that he's coming home and can't wait to see him, and am glad i won't have to go through the rest of this stuff alone.

on the other hand, i was really hoping to have the house ready and settled before he came back. i was hoping to have painted and moved in already. there will still be so much to do when he gets back, and i was really hoping to just have him come home and be impressed with all the work i did, and i would be a hero and we could just go on with life.

more setbacks

the new tub and toilet were supposed to go in this weekend. early early saturday morning i dragged myself over to the house to meet the plumber. we then spent a half hour trying to figure out where the heck the water meter was so we could turn the water off.

what idiot buried the cover for the water meter? whoever it was, you failed. we still found it.

anyway, we got the old toilet out and set to one side. then the plumber set to work ripping out all the tiles so he could get the tub out. that's about the point where bryan's mom and i opened all of the windows and doors, turned on a couple fans, and evacuated the house.

unplanned

this weekend i started painting the first of the bedrooms, the one on the corner that will be my sewing room. as i've mentioned before, i'm painting it purple. actually a very light lavender/violet color. so light it's almost pink in certain light.

i called my mom to tell her about it and as we were talking i realized that i have basically just recreated my bedroom from when i was living with my parents.

-the two houses have startlingly similar floorplans and this is the same room that was my room in their house.
-it's nearly the same color purple that i had painted my bedroom
-both rooms had green carpet, leading to wood floors in the hallway
-both rooms had vaulted ceilings, painted white

my mom laughed when we realized that it was nearly the same room, and told me she still had some of the unicorn wallpaper border we had used on my old bedroom if i wanted her to send it to me. i declined. though i may have her send me the white vinyl blinds on which i had painted a mural...
